Risk Assessments

In 2000 Cabinet mandated the South African Police Services to regulate physical security standards in the government, parastatals as well as National Key Points. South African Police Services have, through a consultation process with the affected stakeholder, compiled: Minimum Physical Security Standards for implementation by all organs of the state. .

The Minimum Physical Security Standards (MPSS) provide guidance on the required minimum levels of physical security. In terms of Chapter 11 of the MIPSS document Senior Management, Security Manager and all employees within the department/institution are responsible for enforcing these MPSS.

In terms of thee MPSS as well as Afri Guard’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System the use of Risk Assessments, becomes an integral part of all processes. Risk Assessment thus in this context directs all managements decisions to a more inclusive role of all stakeholders external and internal.

The aim of any risk assessment process is to remove a hazard or reduce the level of its risks by adding precautions or control measures, as necessary. By doing so we aim to create a safer and healthier workplace.

The Risk Assessment involves the:

  • Identification of hazards
  • To analyse or evaluate the severity of the risk associated with the specific hazard.
  • Determine appropriate ways to eliminate or control the hazard.

In practical terms a risk assessment is a thorough look at your workplace to identify those things, situations, processes , etc. that may cause harm , particulary to people but also with regard to your customers.

After identification is made, you evaluate how likely and severe the risk is, and then decide what measures should be in place to effectively prevent or control the harm from happening again or in the likelihood thereof. Risk Assessments has thus a more pro-active role in terms of ISO 9001.

It is also good practice to involve individuals who have a good working knowledge of the specific workplace. Staff that should be involved always include supervisors and workers who work with the process under review as they are the most familiar with the operation.
